Cutout Stars - A cool 3 fabric star quilt block

Love stars and cutouts? This star quilt block mimics a cutout star, similar to cutting out cookies. The top left corner star is the remaining "dough" or fabric, while the bottom right is the actual "cutout" star. This block separate the two stars with a diagonal chain. A star block that is made with 3 fabrics, the more contrast in the fabrics, the better this quilt block looks. Pick a bold style fabric for the chain, so when you combine more blocks, the chain creates a secondary pattern.

A fun star block that can be used for a multitude of craft projects. One makes a nice centerpiece or table topper, three makes a nice table runner, and four or more makes a quilt. Check out this 9x9 block layout made with various animal & jungle fabrics. This finished at a 48"x48" quilt. A great lap size or small throw size quilt.

What makes this block more great... you can rotate the blocks to create different patterns. With four or more blocks, rotate the blocks to see how many different layouts you can come up with. Here are a few I came up with but there are so many options.

Log Cabin Floret - A Flowering quilt block

Log Cabin Flower & Star quilt block

We know that the log cabin quilt block is one of the most popular quilt blocks there is. How about a log cabin quilt block with a flower? One of my favorite quilt blocks is this twist on a log cabin block, that creates a flower... or FLORET when you combine 4 or more blocks. It's a fun block that has numerous layouts. There is also a 4 block layout with two options. The 1st option is a standard layout that makes the Floret. The 2nd option is a layout that makes a star. Both these 4 block layouts make a nice table topper or wall hanging. I have 6 sample quilt layouts using 36 blocks below. The Log Cabin Floret quilt block is a 10x10" block and jelly roll friendly.

A block that is versatile in layouts and any color combination looks good. Whether you want it to be monochrome, one colorway, scrappy, or your favorite holiday fabrics... they all will look great. I completed one in orange and yellow fabrics with a white background. This is a typical layout for this quilt block with all the blocks making the floret in the center of 4 blocks. Combined across the rows and columns, the stars appear. A nice bright and light quilt that can be used for the spring & summer months, or to pair with an orange or yellow decor theme.

This is a confident beginner quilt block. Basic quilting skills are necessary to make this quilt block. Knowledge of log cabin block sewing is also helpful when making this quilt block.

In addition to the 6 sample layouts I have made, keep rotating your quilt blocks to create many more designs. See how this one little block can create multiple star designs, floret (flower) designs, zig zag designs, and so much more. My quilt block, your quilt design.

What to do with fabric square scraps

Got scraps?

If you are a quilter, chances are you have a box or bin of fabric scraps. Pieces that range from skinny strips to larger squares and rectangles. I have been toying with options to use those scrap fabrics in an organized manner and finally got a pattern done. This pattern uses charm squares or yardage for the main background and base fabric + various size scrappy squares. You can also use scraps for the background if you have a bunch in one colorway. Not matter your selection, you can create this scrappy star block with any color combination.

Just a simple pattern for beginners to use up scraps and create a fun star quilt block or pattern.

This block finishes at 14" x 14" square. One block makes a nice table topper, 3 blocks makes a nice table runner, and 16 blocks make a 54" x 54" throw quilt. The more scraps you have, the bigger the quilt project you can make.

Welcome! A blog to get started

Quilt much?

I do! After many years of sewing and quilting, I decided to launch an Etsy shop. After 4 years of selling on Etsy, thought I would star to share more details about the projects I make and sell. Besides, one can only post and write so much on an Etsy listing. From how I chose fabrics, to new patterns or quilt blocks, and everything in between, I hope you find something that grabs your interest.

It's not the very beginning, but the beginning of my Etsy shop. Here is one of the early quilts I listed. It's a simple "Disappearing 4 patch" quilt. Made with various blue, aqua, and teal batik fabrics with creamy ivory background fabrics. Just a big blocky quilt for the non-floral person. A nice large throw size quilt, shown on a queen size bed.
